ONC Consolidates Health IT Policy Committee’s Work Groups

On Tuesday, National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo announced that most of the 15 subcommittees, task forces and work groups operating under the Health IT Policy Committee will be restructured into six permanent groups, Modern Healthcare reports (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 7/10).

Details of Work Group Consolidations

On Tuesday, DeSalvo listed the new work groups and their respective leaders. The groups include:

  • Health IT Strategy and Innovation, which will be chaired by Pacific Business Group on Health President and CEO David Lansky as well as a co-chair to be named later;
  • Advanced Health Models and Meaningful Use, which will be chaired by Paul Tang,  chief innovation and technology officer at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and Joe Kimura, medical director of analytics and reporting systems at Atrius Health;
  • Health IT Implementation, Usability and Safety, which will be chaired by David Bates, medical director of clinical and quality analysis and information systems at Partners HealthCare System and Larry Wolf, a health IT strategist with Kindred Healthcare;
  • Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, which will be chaired by Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative President and CEO Micky Tripathi and Chris Lehmann, a professor at Vanderbilt University;
  • Consumer Perspective and Engagement, which will be chaired by Bechtel Health Advisory Group President Christine Bechtel and a co-chair to be named later; and
  • Privacy and Security, which will be chaired by Deven McGraw, a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, and a co-chair to be named later.

DeSalvo added that ONC still is recruiting work group members, with a focus on finding members who have diverse geographic and experiential backgrounds.

Meanwhile, another task force formed under the Health IT Policy Committee to examine the implications of an April report on health IT and interoperability will remain to do “a deeper dive” into sustainability, governance and business models (Modern Healthcare, 7/10).
