Among the most crucial aspects of any EHR system is its ability to store, manage, and access different types of data – text, images, etc.

 VersaSuite supports all of the latest standards for data exchange, including Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM), the generally accepted standard for image data exchange and communication.

DICOM was created by and endorsed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) to unify the image capture, viewing, and sharing processes, and there are hundreds of diagnostic tools that comply with the standard, making data exchange and communication between VersaSuite and diagnostic equipment simple and intuitive.

VersaSuite is fully DICOM compliant, and supports over 110 image formats.  Using our comprehensive VersaPACS image viewer, you can view, browse, and manipulate hundreds of images, DICOM or non-DICOM, simultaneously.  VersaSuite also supports some of the most advanced features of the DICOM standard, including the ability to measure real distances on the computer screen, regardless of image or monitor size.

Providing an electronic interface to medical instruments is a hallmark of any powerful EHR system. The direct communication between the EHR system and the medical instruments and management of the data gathered via the medical instruments by the EHR system is an integral part of a true paperless office. Direct capture of data by the EHR system not only saves resources and eliminates human errors but also makes data accessible to the healthcare provider from anywhere in the world.

Instrument Interfacing

VersaSuite will work with any DICOM compliant hardware.  Additionally, VersaSuite will work with instruments from the following vendors:


VersaSuite interfaces with a wide range of medical devices and equipment spanning all medical disciplines.

There are 2 broad technical standards that dictate device interoperability: Health Level 7 (HL7) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM). VersaSuite strictly adheres to both standards. Additionally, VersaSuite is an active member of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) organization, which helps define processes and protocols for information exchange.

Health Level 7 (HL7)

HL7 is used in 2 different ways: software-to-software integration, ie sending and receiving lab orders to an external lab; and non-imaging hardware-to-software integration, ie reading heart monitor data into the Electronic Health Record (EHR). VersaSuite’s internally developed, seamlessly integrated HL7 engine comes with every VersaSuite installation, and is both HL7 2.x and 3.x (XML-based) compliant that can support virtually any integration.  VersaSuite currently supports hundreds of HL7 messages. And because VersaSuite has complete control over its own HL7 engine — unlike many of VersaSuite’s competitors that rely on external HL7 engines — VersaSuite can quickly add support for new HL7 messages as the need arises. VersaSuite can integrate with any HL7-compliant device or system.

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM)

DICOM has traditionally only been used for radiology imaging studies.  More recently, digital imaging has grown within other disciplines such as cardiology, OBGYN, ophthalmology, and orthopedics, to name a few. Device makers in these fields and others are moving towards the DICOM standard for image storage and interoperability. VersaSuite adheres to the DICOM standard.  We never store images in a proprietary format, and never modify images in any way, shape, or form. VersaSuite can integrate with any DICOM-compliant device.

Moreover, VersaSuite offers a DICOM-converter, called Modality Capture.  Modality Capture, aka Modcap, is a small stand-alone application that converts non-DICOM images into DICOM images that can then be fed into any Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Modcap can be used in real-time clinical workflows, or can be used to convert thousands or even millions of legacy images in batch.

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE)

VersaSuite is a founding member of the IHE movement since 2006. As part of this organization, VersaSuite works with vendors across the healthcare continuum to define standards, protocols, and processes to govern information exchange in clinical environments of all shapes and sizes. Additionally, VersaSuite is implemented one of the only IHE ophthalmology installations at the Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Non Standards-Compliant Devices

VersaSuite understands that not all devices are HL7 or DICOM-compliant. We make efforts to help our clients integrate those devices wherever possible. Over the past 15 years, VersaSuite has integrated with dozens of non-compliant devices including autorefractors, lensometers, heart monitors, lab equipment, and more, and is frequently integrating with new devices based on our clients needs.
